Escaped rhesus monkey shot by Mississippi mother

One of the rhesus monkeys that escaped after a truck overturned on Interstate 59 near Heidelberg, Mississippi, was shot dead early Sunday by mother Jessica Bond Ferguson, who said she feared for her five children after warnings about disease. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office said a homeowner found a monkey and that state wildlife officials took possession. Tulane University said the monkeys, part of a research shipment not owned or transported by the university, had pathogen-free checkups. Authorities said most of the 21 monkeys died in the crash; three were believed to have escaped. The highway patrol is investigating.
