Homeowner kills escaped monkey amid safety fears

One of the Rhesus monkeys that escaped after a truck overturned on a Mississippi road on 28 October was shot Sunday by a homeowner near Heidelberg. Jessica Bond Ferguson said she fired after being warned the monkeys might be diseased and fearing for her five children, having spotted the animal about 60 feet away. The Jasper County sheriff’s office confirmed a homeowner found a monkey and said wildlife officials took possession. Tulane University said the animals, previously housed at its research center, were not its property and had not been exposed to infectious agents. Three monkeys remain at large.
