CARROLL COUNTY, Va. — Deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office responded to a welfare check at 13658 Fancy Gap Highway on Friday at 9:26 p.m., where they made contact with a man identified as Michael Puckett. During the interaction, Puckett opened fire on the deputies, who returned fire. Both deputies were struck; one suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead, while the second was hit in his protective gear and is receiving medical treatment and is expected to recover. CARROLL COUNTY authorities said Puckett fled the scene and remains at large as a coordinated law enforcement search is underway. Officials warned he should be considered armed and extremely dangerous and urged anyone who sees him or has information to not approach and to call 911 immediately. The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest, and tips can be directed to Division Four Dispatch at (540) 444-7788.
