The FDA approved Merck's Enflonsia, a new preventative shot for infants against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This competes with Sanofi and AstraZeneca's Beyfortus, which faced supply shortages last year. Enflonsia's advantage is a weight-independent dosage. Merck aims to begin shipping before the fall RSV season. The approval provides another option to combat RSV, a leading cause of infant hospitalizations, while other RSV vaccines are available only for adults or pregnant women. Clinical trials showed Enflonsia significantly reduced RSV-related hospitalizations and lower respiratory infections in infants.
