New Norovirus Strain Disrupts Seasonal Outbreaks

A new norovirus strain, GII.17, caused a record wave of outbreaks in the US last year, starting the season unusually early in October. This contrasts with previous years where outbreaks peaked around December. While outbreaks have since returned to typical levels, the dominance of GII.17 raises concerns about future early onset seasons. Other countries also experienced unusual norovirus activity. However, experts remain uncertain whether GII.17 will permanently displace the previously dominant GII.4 strain, suggesting the situation requires ongoing monitoring.
