Millions of US Kids Affected by Parental Addiction

Read, Watch or Listen

A new study reveals that 25% of U.S. children, approximately 19 million, have a parent with a substance use disorder (SUD). This is significantly higher than previous estimates. The study, using data from the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, highlights that 7.6 million children live with a parent with moderate or severe SUD, and 3.4 million with a parent with multiple SUDs. Experts emphasize the need for increased awareness, screening, and readily available support for families affected by parental SUD, noting the high risk of health issues for these children. Alcohol use disorder is the most prevalent among affected parents.
