President Trump teased a major announcement during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, describing it as "one of the most important announcements" in years. He offered no details about the subject, only stating it would be positive and made before his Middle East trip, sometime between Thursday and Monday. The announcement is viewed as a characteristic display of Trump's showmanship, designed to generate media attention without revealing concrete information.

President Trump is employing outdated wartime laws, like the Alien Enemies Act and Insurrection Act, to circumvent legal challenges and expedite migrant deportations. He's declared a border emergency, enabling the potential use of the military and labeling migrants as "enemy combatants." This tactic allows for quicker, unreviewable deportations, potentially bypassing due process. Critics argue these actions are illegal and unconstitutional outside a declared war, raising concerns about human rights violations and undermining the judicial system. Trump's actions are seen as a blatant attempt to bypass established legal processes and accelerate deportations, even potentially targeting US citizens.

Reuters reports that during Trump's second term, US military flights carrying weapons to Ukraine were halted for several days due to a verbal order from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The order, originating from Hegseth's office, wasn't known to other top national security officials, including President Trump. While the White House claims the pause was a deliberate policy decision, it cost $1.6 million and highlights the chaotic policymaking within the Trump administration. The flights resumed within a week, but the incident exposed internal disagreements on Ukraine aid and an unclear command structure within the Pentagon.

Congressional leaders from both parties are protesting the White House's shutdown of a federal spending tracking website, mandated by Congress in 2022. In a letter to OMB Director Russell Vought, they challenged the rationale, citing legal violations. The White House claims the website requires disclosure of sensitive information, violating separation of powers. However, the Government Accountability Office disputes this, stating only some data is sensitive. Lawmakers and advocacy groups are demanding the website's restoration, with some calling the White House justifications 'laughable' and accusing them of hiding decisions from the public. The shutdown has created bipartisan pushback against the administration's actions.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is considering a Georgia Senate run in 2026, prompting concern among Republicans. While her high profile and fundraising abilities are assets, her polarizing views could hurt her chances against incumbent Jon Ossoff, who leads her in polls. Republicans fear a repeat of Herschel Walker's unsuccessful 2022 Senate bid. Democrats are encouraging Greene's candidacy, believing it would benefit Ossoff. Greene herself claims she could win the governor's, Senate, or House primaries.

Wealthy US conservative Catholics are actively lobbying the College of Cardinals before the papal conclave to influence the selection of Pope Francis' successor. Groups like the Papal Foundation and the Napa Institute, with connections to figures like Cardinal Timothy Dolan and President Trump, are hosting lavish events and pledging significant donations. While their efforts aim to sway the election towards a more conservative candidate, the outcome remains uncertain, given Pope Francis' substantial influence on the composition of the electorate.

Congress is working on President Trump's proposed bill, featuring tax cuts, spending reductions, and increased border security funding. Republicans are aiming for House passage by Memorial Day, but progress is slow. The bill includes significant increases in Pentagon and Homeland Security spending, along with measures to increase deportations and border wall construction. Democrats oppose the bill, calling it an "extreme Republican agenda." Other proposals include student loan repayment plan changes, federal employee pension cuts, and expanded drilling on public lands.

Rep. Lou Correa (D-CA) voted with Republicans to repeal California's 2035 electric vehicle mandate, despite his support for climate action. He cited the high cost of electric vehicles and concerns from his working-class constituents as reasons for his vote. Correa acknowledged giving President Trump a victory but prioritized listening to his constituents' economic concerns over environmental policy.

A US judge ordered the Trump administration to admit approximately 12,000 refugees into the United States, rejecting the administration's narrower interpretation of a court ruling. The ruling stems from a lawsuit challenging President Trump's 2020 executive order suspending the refugee admissions program. The judge stated the administration's interpretation was a misrepresentation of the appeals court decision and ordered the resumption of refugee processing for those with confirmed travel plans before January 20, 2020. The administration had argued for admitting only 160 refugees, a number the judge deemed inaccurate.

Congress is working on President Trump's proposed bill, encompassing tax cuts, spending reductions, and increased border security funding. While some committees have completed their portions, others, including key tax and commerce committees, are still in progress. The bill includes significant funding for border wall construction, increased border patrol, and stricter immigration policies. The Pentagon and national security also receive substantial funding. Significant changes are proposed for student loan repayment and federal employee pensions. Democrats oppose the bill, calling it an "extreme Republican agenda." The House aims for passage by Memorial Day, though delays are possible, with the final bill targeted for July 4th.
