The Trump administration is offering illegal immigrants $1,000 and paid travel to self-deport, using the CBP One app to track their return. This initiative, touted as a cost-effective and dignified alternative to traditional deportation (averaging $17,000 per person), aims to reduce illegal crossings. While the administration highlights a drop in border arrests and increased ICE detentions, the plan faces criticism and legal challenges. The offer includes a potential future pathway to legal US residency for those who self-deport.

After two decades, the Real ID Act's deadline is here. The act, passed in 2005 following 9/11, aims to standardize state-issued IDs to prevent counterfeiting. Implementation faced resistance due to costs, privacy concerns, and varying state approaches. While most states now offer Real ID-compliant licenses, millions haven't upgraded. The new deadline impacts air travel, particularly for undocumented immigrants, as some states issue licenses regardless of immigration status. This two-tier system is facing criticism and potential penalties from the federal government.

In 1989, facing a budget crisis, New Hampshire pioneered a Medicaid provider tax, a maneuver that inflated Medicaid spending to draw more federal funds. This 'gaming' of the system, as former Governor Judd Gregg called it, has become widespread. Now, nearly every US state uses similar taxes, with some receiving over one-third of their Medicaid funding this way, highlighting a significant reliance on this method for financing the program covering 72 million Americans.

Romania's presidential election saw Simion win the first round due to widespread dissatisfaction with established parties, while Dan, stronger in urban areas, narrowly advanced to the second round. Dan secured 21% of the vote, beating the governing coalition's candidate. The second round will see a realignment of voter support, with Dan positioning himself as the only alternative to a hard-right candidate, warning of potential destabilization. Turnout was 53%.

Eighteen states filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, alleging its suspension of wind energy project permits is jeopardizing the industry's growth. Attorney General Letitia James stated the halt threatens job losses and billions in investments, hindering the shift away from fossil fuels. The lawsuit challenges a January 2020 executive order that paused permits pending federal review and considers terminating existing wind farm leases, creating significant uncertainty for the sector.

California Governor Gavin Newsom proposed a $7.5 billion federal film tax credit to counter President Trump's call for 100% tariffs on foreign-produced movies. This would be the largest US government subsidy for the film industry, aiming to boost domestic production. Newsom's proposal follows Trump's meeting with actor Jon Voight and his subsequent social media post advocating for "movies made in America, again."

El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele ordered the arrest of five bus company heads for defying his order of a week of free bus rides due to highway construction. The order, announced via social media, caused widespread chaos. Bukele accused the companies of sabotage, claiming the government covered their daily income, though this wasn't independently verified. The bus companies cited confusion over the sudden announcement and payment methods for drivers. This incident adds to Bukele's controversial actions, including the detention of Venezuelan deportees, drawing criticism from international human rights groups.
