A New York federal judge ruled the Trump administration improperly used the Alien Enemies Act (AEA) to deport alleged members of the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang. This marks the second such ruling against the administration's use of the 18th-century law. Judge Alvin Hellerstein granted a preliminary injunction, citing a lack of due process for two plaintiffs deported to El Salvador then returned to New York. Hellerstein argued the administration's claim of an 'invasion' by the gang did not meet the AEA's criteria. A hearing is scheduled for May 21st.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans for a major offensive in Gaza, aiming to capture and hold territory to secure the release of hostages and ultimately collapse the Hamas regime. This decision, however, is highly controversial, facing international condemnation for its potential to exacerbate the conflict, cause further civilian casualties, and worsen the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The UN and European nations have warned against the offensive, citing potential war crimes and violations of international law due to Israel's ongoing blockade of Gaza. Internal Israeli opposition is also growing, with reservists refusing duty and families of hostages expressing fears of government negligence.

California Assembly Democrats reversed course on a bill, AB 379, adding back a proposed automatic felony for buying sex with 16 and 17-year-olds. This follows pressure from Gov. Newsom and other lawmakers. The felony won't apply if the adult is within three years of the minor's age. Assemblymember Maggy Krell, who initially had her name removed from the bill, will be reinstated as a co-author. The bill also aims to strengthen laws against loitering for sex and create a fund for victims. The revised bill faces further scrutiny in the Assembly Appropriations Committee and the State Senate.

President Trump, when questioned about his administration's refusal to comply with a Supreme Court ruling regarding the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, responded "I don't know" when asked if it's his duty to uphold the Constitution. This response has drawn criticism, with some Republicans remaining silent while others offer weak defenses. Trump's administration has provided inconsistent explanations, further fueling the controversy. The incident highlights a perceived disregard for constitutional due process and raises questions about the Republican party's commitment to upholding the Constitution.

A North Carolina judge's attempt to overturn a state Supreme Court election result was blocked by a federal judge. Republican Judge Jefferson Griffin challenged over 60,000 ballots, attempting to disqualify voters who followed all election laws. This was deemed a violation of constitutional rights by Federal Judge Richard Myers, a Trump appointee, who ordered the certification of the Democratic candidate's win. While the ruling likely stands, the incident highlights the GOP's escalating efforts to subvert elections and the vulnerability of democratic processes to judicial manipulation.

A declassified intelligence memo contradicts President Trump's claims that Venezuela's government directly controls the Tren de Aragua gang. The memo, released following a Freedom of Information Act request, states that while Venezuela's permissive environment enables the gang's operations, the Maduro regime doesn't orchestrate its U.S. activities. This contradicts Trump's justification for using the 1798 Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelans to a harsh El Salvadorian prison. While some intelligence agencies suggested facilitation by Venezuelan officials, the overall assessment found no direct control. The memo's release sparked debate, with the Director of National Intelligence defending the administration's actions and Democratic lawmakers criticizing the administration's handling of the information and its use of the Alien Enemies Act.

The Senate confirmed Frank Bisignano as the new Social Security Administration commissioner in a 53-47 party-line vote. Bisignano, a Trump donor and former tech CEO, faces immediate challenges, including proposed restructuring and mass layoffs at the agency. Critics, including Democrats and disability advocates, express concerns about his alleged ties to Elon Musk's "Department of Government Efficiency" (DOGE) and fear negative impacts on beneficiaries. A federal judge, however, recently denied a request to block the proposed changes.

Following his recent election victory, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met with US President Donald Trump at the White House. Despite Trump's past hostile rhetoric and trade war against Canada, the meeting had an amicable tone. Trump praised Carney's political comeback and expressed a desire for friendship, though he reiterated unsubstantiated claims of US subsidies to Canada. Carney firmly rejected any suggestion of Canada becoming the 51st US state. While Trump showed interest in renegotiating the USMCA trade agreement, he remained firm on tariffs. The meeting, closely watched given past tensions, saw both leaders express a desire for continued cooperation, although disagreements remain.

Senator John Fetterman dismissed concerns raised in a letter by his former chief of staff, Adam Jentleson, regarding his mental health following a stroke. Jentleson expressed worries about Fetterman's adherence to his recovery plan and cited concerning behaviors. Fetterman called the letter and subsequent New York Magazine article a 'hit piece,' citing anonymous sources. While Fetterman has been open about his struggles with depression, Jentleson maintains his concerns and hopes Fetterman receives needed help. Fellow Democratic senators have expressed support for Fetterman, acknowledging his health challenges but emphasizing his legislative contributions.

President Trump teased a major announcement during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, describing it as "one of the most important announcements" in years. He offered no details about the subject, only stating it would be positive and made before his Middle East trip, sometime between Thursday and Monday. The announcement is viewed as a characteristic display of Trump's showmanship, designed to generate media attention without revealing concrete information.
