The French Presidential Office debunked a Russian disinformation campaign alleging that a napkin seen in a photo of European leaders visiting Kyiv was drug paraphernalia. Russian spokesperson Maria Zakharova initiated the false claim, later amplified by Russian propagandists. The Elysee Palace dismissed the accusations as absurd, emphasizing the need for vigilance against manipulation. The visit, involving Macron, Starmer, Merz, and Tusk, reaffirmed support for Ukraine and included an endorsement of a ceasefire proposal ignored by Moscow.

Scotland's deputy first minister, Kate Forbes, strongly criticized the UK government's stricter immigration plans, warning of severe consequences for Scotland's care system. The plans aim to reduce overseas care worker recruitment and tighten English language requirements. Care home bosses echoed Forbes' concerns, predicting closures and longer NHS waiting lists due to staff shortages. Forbes suggested a separate "Scottish visa" to address Scotland's unique demographic challenges and workforce needs, while the UK government aims to reduce net migration and implement stricter rules for citizenship and skilled worker visas.

Forty-nine Afrikaners, descendants of Dutch colonists in South Africa, arrived in the US on Monday after being granted refugee status under a Trump-era executive order. The move, funded by the US government, has been met with criticism from the South African government and many South Africans who see it as undermining their sovereignty and based on false claims of persecution. The Afrikaners will be resettled across several US states and are expected to find work quickly, potentially in entry-level positions. The expedited process has raised concerns about potential immigration fraud, given the usual lengthy application times.

Forty-nine white South African farmers, granted refugee status by the Trump administration, departed from Johannesburg on Sunday, arriving in Washington D.C. on Monday. This controversial resettlement plan, criticized by the South African government as politically motivated, follows months of strained relations between the two countries. The US cites alleged land seizures and discrimination against white farmers, claims South Africa denies. The move is particularly contentious given the US's stricter immigration policies for other groups and previous accusations of genocide against white South Africans, widely deemed unfounded.

AI is increasingly being explored for its potential in US foreign policy. Think tanks like the CSIS Futures Lab are using AI models like ChatGPT to analyze conflict scenarios and explore applications in peace negotiations and ceasefire monitoring. While some AI models show pacifist tendencies, others demonstrate a more aggressive approach, highlighting biases in their development. Experts acknowledge limitations, including AI's inability to replicate human connection and its struggle with long-term consequences. Despite these challenges, AI's potential for automating tasks and analyzing vast amounts of data is seen as transformative for diplomacy, albeit with significant risks and challenges.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller's suggestion that the Trump administration could unilaterally suspend habeas corpus has sparked alarm among legal experts and Democrats. This fundamental right allows detained individuals to challenge their detention before a judge. Legal scholars argue that only Congress possesses this power, citing Article I of the Constitution. Democrats warn of a dangerous expansion of presidential power, while Republicans largely remained silent. President Trump's reported involvement in these discussions further fuels concerns about undermining judicial authority and potentially violating established legal safeguards.

Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk has accused Russian intelligence services of orchestrating a massive arson attack at Warsaw's Marywilska shopping centre in May 2024, resulting in the destruction of 1,400 businesses. Polish authorities claim to have identified and apprehended some of those responsible, linking the incident to a broader pattern of alleged Russian sabotage in Europe. Moscow has yet to respond to these accusations, which follow similar allegations in Lithuania concerning an Ikea fire.

California surpassed Japan as the world's fourth-largest economy in 2024, despite facing unprecedented challenges. While tourism booms and the state's population grew for the second consecutive year, wildfires, immigration policies, and a housing crisis threaten future growth. Los Angeles, a key economic driver, faces a billion-dollar budget deficit exacerbated by wildfire damage and Olympic preparations. Homelessness and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic further complicate the state's economic outlook, casting doubt on its long-term resilience.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka's arrest outside a New Jersey immigration detention center sparked a clash between federal agents and three Democratic congressmembers. The congressmembers, conducting oversight, allege the agents escalated the situation leading to Baraka's trespassing charge. The mayor, also a gubernatorial candidate, opposes the center's opening, citing permit issues. The facility, a large ICE detention center, is part of a major deal with GEO Group, expanding US detention capacity. The incident highlights ongoing political tensions surrounding immigration detention.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced plans to overhaul the immigration system, described as 'broken'. Key changes include stricter English language tests for all visa applicants and their adult dependents, a 10-year wait for settlement (instead of five), and higher skilled worker visa thresholds. While aiming for a 'controlled, selective, and fair' system, critics warn of potential family separation and reduced access to settlement. The reforms, part of a wider effort to reduce net migration, also include ending overseas care worker recruitment and prioritizing domestic workers. Implementation is expected to begin after 2026.
