UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced plans to overhaul the immigration system, described as 'broken'. Key changes include stricter English language tests for all visa applicants and their adult dependents, a 10-year wait for settlement (instead of five), and higher skilled worker visa thresholds. While aiming for a 'controlled, selective, and fair' system, critics warn of potential family separation and reduced access to settlement. The reforms, part of a wider effort to reduce net migration, also include ending overseas care worker recruitment and prioritizing domestic workers. Implementation is expected to begin after 2026.

Fifteen states, led by Washington and California, are suing the Trump administration for declaring a national energy emergency in January. The lawsuit, filed in a Washington state court, argues the declaration was a pretext to bypass environmental reviews and expedite fossil fuel projects. The states contend that emergency procedures should only be used in genuine emergencies, not for policy changes. The coalition alleges the executive order unlawfully commands federal agencies to disregard environmental regulations and expedite permits for energy projects.

Rep. Jasmine Crockett revealed that Democratic donors are prioritizing a white male candidate for the 2028 presidential race, citing past losses with female candidates Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris. Crockett stated donors are actively supporting a specific, unnamed white male candidate, expressing concern that nominating a woman again could lead to another electoral defeat. This preference, according to Crockett, stems from a fear among donors that a female nominee is less electable. The revelation sparked discussion about the role of gender in presidential politics and donor influence within the Democratic party.

High tariffs imposed on Chinese imports have caused a significant drop in cargo volume at US West Coast ports, resulting in job losses for dockworkers and truckers. Commerce Secretary Lutnick urged optimism, citing the president's claims that reduced trade is beneficial. However, economists largely disagree, asserting that tariffs increase prices for American consumers. While the administration claims progress in trade talks with China, concerns remain about rising inflation and potential economic recession due to the ongoing trade war.

Three Democratic lawmakers are accusing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of intimidation after a tense encounter at a New Jersey ICE facility. Following the detention of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, a DHS spokesperson suggested the lawmakers could face arrest for allegedly assaulting ICE officers. The lawmakers deny these allegations and claim they were conducting Congressional oversight, citing a law allowing access to such facilities. The incident involved a physical altercation and conflicting accounts, with the lawmakers alleging the DHS created an intimidating environment and the DHS releasing body camera footage.

House Republicans propose selling nearly half a million acres of federal land in Nevada and Utah, aiming to generate revenue and address growth pressures in Western cities. The plan, part of a larger tax cut package, has sparked controversy, with Democrats and conservationists fearing it favors developers and could harm the environment. While some cities see it as a chance to expand, concerns remain about potential land grabs and insufficient safeguards for affordable housing. Opposition exists within the GOP itself, foreshadowing a political battle as the budget process unfolds.

Shira Perlmutter, Register of Copyrights and Director of the U.S. Copyright Office, was abruptly fired by the Trump administration. This follows the recent termination of Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. Perlmutter's dismissal, effective immediately, came via email from the White House. Her tenure included overseeing a report on AI's use of copyrighted materials and emphasizing human creativity in copyright protection. Democrats strongly condemned the action as an unlawful power grab.

The Trump administration's dismantling of US global media agencies, including Voice of America (VOA), has sparked widespread concern. Experts warn this will create a vacuum for promoting democracy and embolden authoritarian regimes like Russia and China. The move has eliminated funding for democracy programs and initiatives, silencing crucial information pipelines for freedom and impacting access to independent news sources worldwide. Critics fear this represents a significant retreat from the US's long-standing role in supporting global democracy.

Donald Trump appointed Judge Jeanine Pirro as interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. This follows Pirro's long-standing relationship with Trump, including previous attempts to secure her in high-ranking positions. Trump's decision comes after the removal of Ed Martin, amid controversy. Pirro's appointment is seen as furthering Trump's agenda of retribution against political opponents, leveraging the Department of Justice for this purpose. Pirro has publicly advocated for purging perceived anti-Trump elements within law enforcement.

Donald Trump's second term has seen new avenues for funding his business empire, including Trump Media & Technology Group, World Liberty Financial, and the $TRUMP meme coin. These ventures, operating with minimal regulation, allow for faster and less traceable financial flows than traditional methods. Investments from sources like a Chinese entrepreneur and an Abu Dhabi-backed fund have generated hundreds of millions for Trump and his family. While the White House claims compliance with conflict-of-interest rules, critics raise concerns about potential bribery and lack of transparency. The legality of foreign funding remains unresolved, and upcoming financial disclosures are anticipated with interest.
