Iowa State Auditor Rob Sand, a Democrat, announced his gubernatorial bid, emphasizing public service over partisan politics. His campaign video highlighted his auditing and prosecutorial experience, omitting his party affiliation. Sand, a political outlier in increasingly conservative Iowa, seeks to counter the Republican dominance under Governor Reynolds, who has overseen stricter laws on abortion, transgender rights, and school books, while limiting Sand's office's power. Despite a narrow reelection win in 2022, Sand aims to capitalize on Iowans' desire for improved governance.

Donald Trump's former lawyer, Todd Blanche, has been appointed acting Librarian of Congress, replacing Carla Hayden, who was fired. The White House's decision to remove Hayden, the first Black and first female Librarian of Congress, has drawn criticism. Brian Nieves and Paul Perkins have also been appointed to acting roles within the Library of Congress, following the removal of other officials deemed opposed to Trump's agenda. The changes are part of a broader purge of officials by the Trump administration.

Georgia has enacted a law shielding pesticide manufacturers, like Bayer, from lawsuits alleging failure to warn of potential dangers, making it the second state after North Dakota to do so. The law protects manufacturers adhering to federal labeling requirements, impacting lawsuits claiming Bayer's Roundup weed killer causes cancer. While the EPA deems glyphosate, Roundup's key ingredient, unlikely carcinogenic when used as directed, Bayer has set aside $16 billion for settlements. The Georgia law, effective January 1st, won't affect existing cases. Bayer advocates for glyphosate's importance in agriculture, citing potential impacts on crop yields and food costs if its use is restricted.

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was denied $622,056 in public matching funds for his mayoral campaign. The New York City Campaign Finance Board found likely illicit coordination between Cuomo's campaign and the super PAC, Fix the City. The board cited a 'red-boxing' tactic, where the campaign seemingly directed the super PAC's ad content, violating campaign finance rules. Cuomo still received $1.5 million in matching funds, but the board withheld the amount spent on the incriminating ad due to the apparent lack of independence.

The Trump administration spent at least $21 million on military flights transporting migrants to Guantanamo Bay between January 20 and April 8. This involved 46 flights totaling 802.5 hours, with an average cost of $26,277 per flight hour. Only 32 migrants are currently at Guantanamo, a tiny fraction of the 30,000 promised. Democrats criticized the operation as a costly political stunt, and Senator Warren denounced the misuse of military resources. Despite logistical and legal flaws, the Pentagon plans to increase capacity with an additional weekly flight.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer unveiled plans to tighten immigration rules, aiming for a significant reduction in net migration. Key measures include banning overseas recruitment of care workers, stricter skilled worker visa requirements, increased employer sponsorship fees, and a longer settlement period. The Home Office estimates these changes could reduce immigration by 100,000 annually by 2029, though critics argue this is insufficient. The government defends the measures as necessary for controlling immigration and ensuring fairness, while opposition parties offer varied critiques.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced stricter immigration policies, aiming to reduce net migration and enhance border control. This move comes amid rising public frustration over high immigration levels and the success of the anti-immigrant Reform UK party. Starmer pledges to tighten regulations across work, family, and student visas, ending what he calls Britain's 'failed experiment in open borders.' While he aims to significantly cut legal migration, he stopped short of setting specific numerical targets. The plan includes increased training for British workers and longer residency requirements for citizenship.

Pope Leo XIV, in his first address to the media, urged the release of imprisoned journalists worldwide. He emphasized the crucial role of press freedom and condemned the jailing of journalists for reporting the truth. He also highlighted the media's responsibility to report truthfully, avoid partisan division, and combat the spread of fanaticism and hatred. The Pope further stressed the ethical use of artificial intelligence in journalism, advocating for its responsible application to benefit humanity.

The French Presidential Office debunked a Russian disinformation campaign alleging that a napkin seen in a photo of European leaders visiting Kyiv was drug paraphernalia. Russian spokesperson Maria Zakharova initiated the false claim, later amplified by Russian propagandists. The Elysee Palace dismissed the accusations as absurd, emphasizing the need for vigilance against manipulation. The visit, involving Macron, Starmer, Merz, and Tusk, reaffirmed support for Ukraine and included an endorsement of a ceasefire proposal ignored by Moscow.

Scotland's deputy first minister, Kate Forbes, strongly criticized the UK government's stricter immigration plans, warning of severe consequences for Scotland's care system. The plans aim to reduce overseas care worker recruitment and tighten English language requirements. Care home bosses echoed Forbes' concerns, predicting closures and longer NHS waiting lists due to staff shortages. Forbes suggested a separate "Scottish visa" to address Scotland's unique demographic challenges and workforce needs, while the UK government aims to reduce net migration and implement stricter rules for citizenship and skilled worker visas.
