Seventeen family members of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, a notorious drug lord, were allowed entry into the U.S. after a deal negotiated with the Trump administration. This was confirmed by Mexican security secretary Omar García Harfuch, who stated the family members weren't wanted in Mexico. The deal, which Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo claims to be unaware of, involved negotiations with El Chapo's son, Ovidio Guzmán López, a top Sinaloa Cartel member. The U.S. Attorney General's office recently charged cartel leaders with narco-terrorism, adding another layer to the complex situation.

Rep. Shri Thanedar temporarily withdrew his impeachment resolution against President Trump, citing a need to add articles regarding a potential gift from Qatar. Despite securing a House vote, the move angered both Democratic and Republican leaders, who deemed it a distraction from pressing issues like healthcare. Thanedar maintains he'll continue his impeachment efforts, while House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized it as a political stunt. The action highlights internal divisions within the Democratic party and comes as Thanedar faces a challenging reelection campaign.

A proposed $20 billion federal school voucher program, championed by Republicans, aims to help families pay for private school tuition nationwide. The plan uses tax credits to incentivize private donations to scholarship organizations, potentially benefiting students from families with incomes up to 300% of the area median. While supporters highlight increased school choice, critics like the NEA raise concerns about decreased funding for public schools and potential harm to students with disabilities. Previous voucher programs have shown mixed results, with some studies indicating negative impacts on academic achievement.

Ximena Arias-Cristobal, a 19-year-old Georgia college student, was mistakenly detained by ICE following a traffic stop. Despite dropped charges, DHS insists she and her father self-deport, citing illegal entry. The agency offered them $1000 each and a flight to Mexico. Arias-Cristobal, who arrived in the US at age 4, is ineligible for DACA. Her father was also detained for traffic violations. The family faces deportation, causing hardship for her mother and younger sister.

President Trump's nominee for Surgeon General, Dr. Casey Means, advocates for the therapeutic use of unproven psychedelic drugs like psilocybin, despite their illegal status under federal law. Means' book and newsletter detail personal experiences with psilocybin, suggesting benefits for mental health and personal growth. This recommendation contrasts with the Surgeon General's traditional role of providing evidence-based health information. Her nomination, based on Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s recommendation, has raised concerns given her promotion of unproven therapies and her inactive medical license. Confirmation hearings are pending.

Donald Trump's meeting with Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Riyadh has sparked hope for normalized relations between the US and Syria. The unexpected encounter, facilitated by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Erdogan, led to Trump lifting US sanctions on Syria. Trump described Sharaa as a 'tough guy' despite his past links to al-Qaeda. This decision, a reversal of Trump's previous stance, has been met with celebrations in Syria, where poverty is widespread following years of civil war. The sanctions relief is expected to boost aid and investment.

Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) unexpectedly forced a House vote on impeaching former President Trump, despite assurances to Democratic leadership he wouldn't. His move, seen as a risky political gamble ahead of his primary, angered fellow Democrats who prioritized focusing on other legislative matters. The vote, interrupting their efforts against GOP spending cuts, sparked intense frustration, with some calling the impeachment push "idiotic." Thanedar defended his actions, stating it's about doing what's right, even if it's not a guaranteed win.

A federal judge ordered the release of Badar Khan Suri, a Georgetown University postdoctoral scholar, from ICE detention. Judge Patricia Giles ruled that his detention violated his First and Fifth Amendment rights. Suri, accused by DHS of spreading Hamas propaganda and antisemitism, was deemed not a flight risk or danger. His wife, Maphaz Ahmad Yousef, expressed relief. The ACLU argued the case highlights the government's targeting of individuals with unpopular views. Suri maintains he never made pro-Hamas or antisemitic comments and only expressed support for Palestinians.

The European Union court ruled that the Commission should have released text messages exchanged between President Ursula von der Leyen and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla during Covid-19 vaccine negotiations. A New York Times journalist had requested the messages, which the Commission initially denied. The court's decision highlights the importance of transparency in governmental dealings, particularly in critical situations like the pandemic. This ruling could significantly impact future transparency rules within the EU.

The Justice Department cleared Attorney General Pam Bondi's memo endorsing President Trump's acceptance of a luxury jet from Qatar. The Office of Legal Counsel pre-approved the memo, and ethics officials found no conflict of interest despite Bondi's past lobbying for Qatar. This follows a letter from Sen. Dick Durbin questioning Bondi's involvement and a hold placed on DOJ nominees by Sen. Chuck Schumer. While some Republicans also voiced concerns, the DOJ maintains the legality of the gift.
