Conflicting statements arose from DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons regarding a congressional visit to a New Jersey detention facility. Noem called the visit a "political stunt," while Lyons acknowledged Congress' right to unannounced inspections, albeit with proper identification and screening. Three representatives claim they were conducting oversight, while DHS accuses them of attempting to break in. The visit led to the arrest of Newark's mayor for trespassing, escalating into a confrontation. The incident highlights ongoing tensions over immigration enforcement policies and resource allocation, with plans for increased deportations and detention capacity.

Republican lawmakers are expressing concern over President Trump's proposal to accept a $400 million plane from Qatar as the new Air Force One. This unprecedented move raises ethical and legal questions, causing dissent within the usually unified Republican party. While some Republicans voice security concerns and potential foreign influence, others support the gift, dismissing concerns as unfounded. Democrats plan to challenge the proposal, citing constitutional violations. The debate highlights a rift within the Republican party and potential implications for US-Qatar relations.

Mexico's security chief confirmed that 17 family members of Ovidio Guzmán López, son of former Sinaloa Cartel leader "El Chapo," crossed into the U.S. last week. This followed Guzmán López's 2023 extradition and apparent negotiations with U.S. authorities. The crossing was reportedly part of a plea deal to avoid trial on drug trafficking charges. Mexican authorities weren't pursuing the family, but expect the U.S. to share information regarding the deal. The confirmation coincided with U.S. charges of "narcoterrorism" against cartel leaders.

A new book by CNN's Jake Tapper and Axios' Alex Thompson alleges that some of President Biden's Cabinet members doubted his ability to handle 2 a.m. emergencies by the end of his presidency. The book, "Original Sin," claims Biden's inner circle limited access, filtering information and potentially influencing his decisions. Cabinet secretaries described Biden's decline, noting instances of disorientation and a lack of engagement. The White House disputes these claims, asserting Biden's effectiveness.

President Trump hosted over 30 US business leaders, including executives from major banks, AI firms, and defense contractors, for lunch in Saudi Arabia. The event, part of Trump's Middle East tour, aimed to foster networking opportunities with Saudi investors and demonstrate support for American industry. The lunch followed a White House announcement of $600 billion in secured Saudi investments. Many attending companies faced challenges due to Trump's trade policies, making this trip crucial for strengthening relationships and advancing joint interests.

The EU General Court ruled that the European Commission wrongly denied the release of text messages between Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla concerning Covid-19 vaccine contracts. The court found the Commission's explanation for non-disclosure implausible, citing inconsistent information and a failure to prove the messages' non-existence. This decision, following a Freedom of Information request, is considered a victory for transparency and potentially damages von der Leyen's reputation. The Commission plans to review the ruling.

California faces a $12 billion budget shortfall, adding to a previous $27.3 billion deficit. Governor Gavin Newsom attributes the shortfall partly to President Trump's tariffs, alongside state overspending. To address the crisis, Newsom's revised budget proposes cuts to healthcare for undocumented immigrants, weight loss treatments, and overtime for in-home care workers. Other measures include shifting Cal Fire funding and potentially raiding Proposition 35 funds. Despite the deficit, California's spending remains higher than the previous budget.

South Carolina's Supreme Court upheld the state's six-week abortion ban, interpreting the law's vague definition of 'fetal heartbeat' based on legislative intent. Despite medical ambiguity, the court found that both proponents and opponents consistently understood the law to prohibit abortions after six weeks. Planned Parenthood and other opponents argue the ban is medically imprecise and harms women's health, vowing further legal challenges. The ruling follows the US Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v Wade and places South Carolina among states with restrictive abortion laws. Governor McMaster celebrated the decision, while Planned Parenthood criticized it for its impact on women.

President Trump concluded a visit to Qatar, receiving a warm welcome from Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. The Emir gifted Trump a luxury jetliner. US Senator Lindsey Graham will brief European leaders in Antalya on Thursday about his proposed sanctions against Russia. These sanctions, aimed at crippling the Russian economy, are seen by Europeans as crucial to persuading Vladimir Putin to negotiate with Ukraine. While Trump initially supported Putin's call for talks, some within his administration are privately expressing concerns about Putin's intentions. Graham's sanctions, including a 500% tariff on imports from countries buying Russian energy, could trigger a trade war with China and India. The European Union also has its own sanctions package, but believes Graham's measures are key to impacting the conflict.
