Serbia Detains Police Over Protest Force
Tap title to read story
Serbian authorities detained nine active police officers and one former officer on Wednesday for allegedly using excessive force against detainees during anti‑corruption protests last year in Belgrade.
The interior ministry said the suspects, who served in an elite unit, tortured and intimidated several people detained in the garage of the government compound on 14‑15 August 2025.
The protests, which swept across Serbia in 2025 and 2026, ultimately led to the ouster of the populist Serbian Progressive Party in a 25 October snap parliamentary election by the leaderless Student List.
The ministry’s statement accused the officers of inflicting great pain and severe suffering to obtain information and punish detainees.
Police used teargas, crowd‑control vehicles and stun grenades to disperse crowds, while students and activists reported injuries and psychological trauma.
