Apple is preparing to launch its digital wallet service, Apple Pay, in India next month, starting with credit cards issued by Axis Bank. According to three people with knowledge of the matter, Apple plans to incorporate additional Indian lenders over time through direct agreements, replicating phased rollout strategies used in international markets. Representatives for Apple, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank declined to comment or did not immediately respond. Apple Pay allows users to complete contactless transactions using tokenized card credentials stored on devices, bypassing standalone applications. The entry introduces competition to an established digital payments ecosystem dominated by the Unified Payments Interface, which accounts for the vast majority of digital volume. The Reserve Bank of India previously permitted biometric authentication for card transactions, enabling Apple Pay to function via Face ID and Touch ID. Counterpoint Research notes Apple smartphone market share in India has doubled since year 2022.
