Starlink rival Eutelsat plans OneWeb expansion after €1 billion satellite order
PUBLISHED Sep 12, 2026, 4:25 PM ET
Satellite operator Eutelsat has announced a one billion euro investment to procure two hundred twenty-nine additional satellites for its OneWeb low Earth orbit constellation. The procurement expands previous orders of four hundred forty Airbus-built satellites scheduled for delivery beginning in the fourth quarter. Supported by the French and British governments as a strategic alternative to Elon Musk's Starlink, the expanded fleet aims to exceed one thousand satellites to provide secure communications for government, enterprise, and telecom customers. The deployment also bridges operational coverage until the European Union introduces its IRIS² secure communications constellation near the end of the decade. Additionally, Eutelsat booked two Ariane launch missions for two thousand twenty-seven and two thousand twenty-eight during the Paris space summit. OneWeb currently operates more than six hundred satellites, while market leader Starlink maintains over eleven thousand operational spacecraft in low Earth orbit.
