Pemex battles fresh Gulf of Mexico oil leak

State oil producer Pemex is working to contain a fresh crude oil leak from an offshore pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico, located off the coast of Campeche. Mexico's Science Ministry announced that the leak was detected on Thursday morning, prompting continuous monitoring of the resulting oil slick. Authorities project that the slick will drift westward in the coming days and currently do not forecast any impact on the coast. No official estimate of the volume spilled has been released by state officials. This incident follows a major Pemex spill in February near the Abkatun field, which drew criticism due to slow acknowledgment and uncalculated environmental damage. Pemex operates an extensive network of mature assets and offshore infrastructure in its primary production region. The Science Ministry stated it will maintain surveillance to track potential shifts in weather and ocean conditions affecting the slick's trajectory as response efforts continue across the region.
