Missing teen found adrift at sea on overturned boat

PUBLISHED Sep 12, 2026, 11:02 AM ET

A teenage boy was rescued after spending nearly three days adrift on the overturned hull of a small fishing boat near St. Lawrence Island, while his older brother and cousin tragically died. The group set out on an eighteen-foot vessel that capsized in rough weather after its motor became entangled in a fishing line. The survivor and his cousin initially climbed onto the hull, but the cousin slipped into the water and drowned. Family members reported the group missing when they failed to return as scheduled. A United States Coast Guard aircrew located the teenager four miles off the island, dropping a life raft and supplies. A good Samaritan fishing vessel, the Northwest Explorer, subsequently pulled the teenager safely aboard. Local rescue crews recovered the bodies of the other two family members from the nearby water. Authorities confirmed the surviving teen suffered from moderate hypothermia before receiving medical evaluation following the multi-day maritime ordeal.
