EPA Proposes Sweeping Rollback of Methane Rules for Stripper Wells

PUBLISHED Sep 11, 2026, 6:54 AM ET

The United States Environmental Protection Agency is advancing a draft proposal to weaken environmental regulations governing over seven hundred thousand low producing oil and gas wells nationwide. According to documents reviewed by journalists, the initiative targets facilities known as stripper wells, which produce fifteen barrels daily. Under the new framework, mandatory leak inspections and equipment upgrades would be substantially reduced for these marginal sites. While these wells account for six percent of total domestic production, industry data indicates they generate roughly half of the sector's total methane emissions. Proponents argue the deregulation will save operators forty two billion dollars through twenty fifty and boost American energy output. Conversely, environmental advocates warn the policy will accelerate climate change by increasing greenhouse gas emissions. The previous administration established strict methane controls as a core component of national climate strategies. The draft rule is currently undergoing administrative review by the White House today.
