Peak viewing windows vary by geography, with New England expected to peak from late September through late October, while the Mid-Atlantic and Great Lakes experience peak colors in mid- to late October. The Southern Appalachians offer an extended viewing window stretching into early November, and western mountainous regions begin shifts in September. Healthy late-spring and summer moisture in areas like New England supports vibrant displays, whereas pockets experiencing summer heat stress and drought may encounter patchier colors or premature leaf drop. Furthermore, a strengthening El Niño pattern points toward an overall warmer and drier autumn, making timely cool nights critical for locking in vibrant autumn colors nationwide.
