Chinese electric bike imports surge as Africa’s EV investments diversify

Africa recorded a sharp surge in electric motorcycle and three-wheeler imports from China during the first half of 2026, reaching one hundred fourteen million dollars. Northern African nations including Morocco, Egypt, and Algeria led the continental increase with eighty thousand one hundred eighty-eight units valued at twenty-one million seven hundred thousand dollars imported by Morocco alone. Independent specialist Peter Kossakowski noted that this trend highlights a regional market divide. While North African consumers primarily purchase fully built electric scooters and mopeds for personal commuting, buyers in East and West Africa utilize motorcycles as heavy commercial assets traveling up to one hundred kilometers daily. Simultaneously, startup investments in sub-Saharan Africa remain heavily concentrated on establishing local assembly plants, battery-swapping networks, and commercial ecosystems. Industry analysts report that transitioning from traditional gasoline engines to electric models significantly reduces urban air pollution and high fuel consumption across the region.
