In ‘Primetime,’ Robert Pattinson takes on the ‘irresistible’ role of Chris Hansen

Robert Pattinson premiered “Primetime” at Venice Film Festival on Saturday, portraying Chris Hansen in Lance Oppenheim’s drama about the controversial “To Catch a Predator” television franchise. The film, written by Ajon Singh, is inspired by journalist Luke Dittrich’s Esquire article about a 2006 sting involving Texas prosecutor Bill Conradt, who died by suicide as police prepared to enter his home. Pattinson, initially attached as a producer, said he became increasingly drawn to playing Hansen and worked extensively on the host’s distinctive voice and mannerisms. Oppenheim, making his narrative-feature debut after documentaries, said the film examines the competing ambitions surrounding televised investigations and entertainment. Hansen was not involved in production and has criticized the project, including the terms attached to an advance screening he declined. Pattinson said he hopes Hansen ultimately likes the movie. A24 plans U.S. theatrical release for Sept. 25. The film is competing for Venice’s Golden Lion.
