Dutch Central Bank Moves 86 Tonnes of Gold Out of US and Canada

PUBLISHED Sep 3, 2026, 3:47 AM ET

De Nederlandsche Bank has reallocated 86 tonnes of its gold reserves from the United States and Canada to London, citing growing geopolitical instability and the need to strengthen crisis preparedness. The operation, conducted between March and August 2026, shifted a major portion of the nation's bullion from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Bank of Canada to the Bank of England. Following the transfer, London's share of Dutch reserves increased from 18.1% to 32.1%, while the holdings in New York and Ottawa each declined from over 31% and 19% respectively to 18.5%. Domestic reserves held in Zeist remained steady at 30.8%, preserving the total national stockpile of 612.4 tonnes. Bank officials explained that London offers superior liquidity and compliance with international trade standards, making the assets faster to mobilize during systemic market disruptions. The physical relocation was executed through a hybrid method of selling and repurchasing bullion alongside physical shipments to avoid high transit risks. While emphasizing that the reserves are held as a long-term safety anchor, the central bank noted that evolving global trade tensions necessitate more distributed and flexible custody arrangements.
