US Justice Department expands beef price probe to eight retailers

The U.S. Department of Justice expanded its antitrust investigation into beef pricing, issuing inquiry letters to eight major retailers, including Walmart, Costco, and Amazon. Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward requested detailed documentation regarding pricing strategies, wholesale procurement, and profit margins from companies such as Kroger, Albertsons, Aldi, Publix, and Ahold Delhaize USA. The probe follows ongoing scrutiny into dominant meatpackers accused of inflating prices by restricting supply. U.S. beef prices reached record highs amid broader inflation driven by energy costs, straining consumer finances. The antitrust division previously focused heavily on major slaughterhouses like Tyson Foods, Cargill, JBS USA, and National Beef Packing Company, which control the majority of grain-fattened cattle processing. The newly targeted retailers did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the federal inquiry. Federal investigators are now examining whether retail pricing practices compound supply-side pressures affecting consumers nationwide.
