The Oscar statuette is Hollywood’s ultimate recognition, full of lore, mysteries and rules

PUBLISHED Sep 1, 2026, 2:34 PM ET

The Oscar statuette remains Hollywood’s most recognizable symbol of achievement, while its history reflects the film industry’s power, money and institutional evolution. The Associated Press examined the trophy’s origins, uncertain nickname, ownership rules and cultural staying power in a feature published Sept. 1, 2026. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirms the first awards banquet occurred May 16, 1929, and says the statuette is 13½ inches tall and weighs 8½ pounds. The Academy also says the Oscar nickname’s origins are unclear, although the Margaret Herrick “Uncle Oscar” story remains popular. Its regulations require winners and heirs to offer post-1950 statuettes to the Academy for $1 before disposal. The AP notes that production costs are modest compared with awards-season spending, while Oscar recognition can carry professional and commercial value. The 2026 Academy Awards, held March 15, underscored the institution’s continuing relevance, with “One Battle After Another” winning Best Picture.
