The Cleveland Cavaliers waived forward Cam Whitmore on August 29, 2026, after an eight-day tenure following his acquisition in a five-team trade. The transaction allows Cleveland to utilize the league stretch provision on his remaining rookie-scale contract, spreading his salary over three seasons to create approximately 3.6 million dollars in immediate cap space. This financial maneuver enables the franchise to finalize a three-year, 97 million dollar contract extension with guard James Harden while operating above the league hard cap. The hard cap was triggered earlier by a sign-and-trade agreement bringing Peyton Watson to Cleveland. Whitmore, the 20th overall selection in the 2023 NBA Draft, never appeared in a game or practice for the Cavaliers following previous stints with the Houston Rockets and Washington Wizards. He now enters the waiver wire as an unrestricted free agent if unclaimed by another franchise.
