College Football Player Dies After Medical Emergency During Game

William Jewell College junior running back MicahJo Barnett died Saturday following a medical emergency during the team's season opener against Fort Lewis College in Liberty, Missouri. The incident occurred during the first half of the game, prompting emergency responders from Liberty Fire and EMS to rush onto the field around 12:20 PM CDT. Eyewitnesses reported Barnett exhibited seizure-like symptoms before medical personnel administered resuscitation efforts and transported him via ambulance to a local hospital. The school announced his death approximately two hours later. A college spokesperson confirmed Barnett had been medically cleared to participate and carried no known pre-existing health conditions restricting play. The official cause of death remains unannounced by medical examiners. Following the tragedy, the game was immediately suspended, and campus community members gathered Saturday evening for a candlelight vigil on the quad. Both William Jewell College and Fort Lewis College leadership released statements offering profound condolences to his family, teammates, and coaches.
