California Sues Feds Over $120M Canceled Offshore Wind Deal

California Attorney General Rob Bonta and the California Energy Commission filed a lawsuit against the federal administration and Golden State Wind, challenging the cancellation of a one hundred twenty million dollar offshore wind lease agreement in federal waters off the central coast. The legal complaint alleges the termination violates the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act and the Judgment Fund Act, arguing the administration lacked unilateral authority to execute the buyout and disburse taxpayer funds without congressional approval. State officials stated the abrupt cancellation threatens ambitious clean energy mandates, introduces severe market uncertainty, and improperly prioritizes fossil fuel interests over renewable infrastructure. The central coast project represented one of the largest planned utility-scale generation developments in United States waters. A federal judge is currently reviewing the case to determine whether the administrative procedure followed lawful statutory frameworks or constituted executive overreach.
