The Metropolitan Museum of Art's decision to honor fashion designer John Galliano with a major 2027 exhibition has sparked significant backlash due to his 2011 conviction for antisemitic hate speech. The exhibition, "John Galliano: Horizons," is scheduled to launch with the Met Gala on May 3, 2027, with organizers considering a date change to avoid coinciding with Holocaust Remembrance Day. Critics, including New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, have called the decision a "serious mistake." The museum held private meetings with Jewish leaders over the past year to address concerns, with some accepting Galliano's contrition while urging the exhibition to educate about antisemitism. The Anti-Defamation League has accepted Galliano's apology but noted the difficult timing amid rising antisemitism. Galliano, 65, was fired from Dior after the 2011 incident and later rebuilt his career at Maison Margiela.
