Oscar-winning actor Jane Fonda publicly defended Mark Ruffalo after Paramount accused him of invoking antisemitic tropes. Paramount criticized Ruffalo's social media commentary regarding its proposed one hundred ten billion dollar merger with Warner Bros. Discovery. Fonda issued a statement Tuesday through the Committee for the First Amendment, asserting that Ruffalo holds a protected right to critique powerful corporate mergers. She characterized Paramount's allegation as a smear designed to deflect scrutiny from massive media consolidation. The controversy began when Ruffalo shared an Instagram video featuring Oracle executive vice chair Safra Catz discussing defense technology supplied to the Israeli military, tying it to Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison. Paramount denounced the remarks, while Ruffalo strongly rejected claims of bigotry, maintaining that political and corporate criticism is distinct from discrimination. Producer Bruce Cohen supported Fonda's statement, warning against weaponizing antisemitism accusations to suppress dissenting viewpoints across the entertainment industry.
