The city of Hastings, Minnesota, filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday accusing manufacturing conglomerate 3M of contaminating municipal public drinking water wells with perfluorooctanoic acid. The legal complaint alleges that 3M produced the toxic synthetic chemical at its nearby Cottage Grove facility between the 1940s and 2002. Prevailing winds carried smokestack emissions onto local soils, allowing the persistent compounds to leach continuously into regional groundwater aquifers. Court documents state that corporate leadership recognized the significant health hazards of perfluorooctanoic acid for decades while concealing these findings from local officials. Five municipal drinking water wells now require specialized filtration infrastructure to remove the contaminants safely. Hastings is demanding unspecified financial compensation for remediation expenses and ongoing water monitoring. In response, 3M characterized the litigation as unfortunate, pointing instead to its past financial settlements totaling billions to address nationwide per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance contamination.
