The USS George Washington strike group arrived in the Middle East on Aug. 19, replacing the USS Abraham Lincoln, Central Command said Aug. 20. The Navy described the Washington deployment as scheduled, while Lincoln began its return voyage after more than 250 days deployed and over 200 consecutive days without a port call. The rotation follows reports from military-focused outlets and lawmakers about alleged food, water, plumbing, supply and mental-health problems aboard Lincoln; Navy officials have disputed or qualified some accounts. President Donald Trump said Lincoln’s deployment was “not nearly long enough,” while confirming its replacement. Washington’s move from its forward deployment leaves no U.S. aircraft carrier permanently forward-deployed in the Western Pacific, creating a carrier gap as China remains a security concern. The event underscores competing U.S. demands in the Middle East and Indo-Pacific, but does not mean the United States has withdrawn its military presence from the Pacific.
