The United States Department of the Treasury has implemented a new round of sanctions targeting an international courier network accused of smuggling millions of dollars in cash to the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia. Announced on Thursday, the measures designate ten individuals involved in ferrying foreign currency via commercial flights between Iran, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Lebanon. Central to the operation is Turkish businessman Yunus Alper Yilmaz, who allegedly used exchange houses as front organizations to execute transactions for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force. The action expands upon financial networks previously managed by late Iranian General Behnam Shahriyari. Alongside the financial penalties, the U.S. government re-designated Hezbollah as a global terrorist organization to underscore the group's direct subordination to Iranian military command. Vice President JD Vance described the escalation as part of a broader phase of economic pressure against Tehran, while Iranian officials dismissed the measures. The sanctions freeze all assets held by the targeted individuals within U.S. jurisdiction.
