Federal health authorities announced a multistate foodborne illness outbreak spanning fifteen states tied to contaminated alfalfa sprouts produced by a Minnesota grower. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed 55 cases, resulting in 4 hospitalizations. Unlike standard outbreaks limited to a single pathogen, laboratory analyses revealed infections involving multiple strains of Escherichia coli and salmonella bacteria. Illness onset dates range from late May through early August across the affected region. The primary source was traced to Everything Sprouts, LLC, operating in Minneapolis, which distributed products under specific brand names to retail grocery stores and restaurants. Regulatory inspections previously cited the facility for critical sanitation hazards, including a leaking roof dripping water onto processing areas. Federal and state health agencies continue investigating the distribution network, advising consumers to discard affected products immediately to prevent further transmission. The company subsequently announced a comprehensive voluntary product recall following strict regulatory scrutiny today.
