FDA Issues High-Risk Recall for Blueberries and Mixed Berries in 8 States

PUBLISHED Aug 21, 2026, 3:28 AM ET

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially designated the recall of GreenWise Organic frozen blueberries and mixed berries as a Class I recall, the agency’s highest-risk warning. The action follows an ongoing investigation into a multistate outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) O145:H28 infections linked to products sold at Publix supermarkets. The FDA warns of severe health consequences, including potential kidney failure, particularly in vulnerable populations. Twelve cases were reported across Florida and Georgia between May 11 and June 5, 2026, with four hospitalizations. While Publix initiated a stop-sale and broader recall on July 29 after initial findings, the FDA’s new classification highlights the significant danger posed by the contaminated inventory. Consumers in eight states—Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia—are urged to discard the frozen items immediately or return them to Publix stores to ensure public safety.
