Fannie Mae is undergoing another senior-level restructuring, with roughly 12 high-ranking officials let go during the week ending Friday, Aug. 21, according to The Wall Street Journal, which cited people familiar with the matter. Several executives were notified Wednesday that their positions had been eliminated. The affected roles reportedly include leaders overseeing multifamily lending, low-income housing tax-credit investments, finance, regulatory affairs and communications. Bill Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, said technology is creating opportunities to remove unnecessary processes and, at times, personnel. Fannie Mae and FHFA did not immediately comment to the Journal. Fannie Mae remains a major U.S. mortgage-market institution: its company disclosures show a $4.0 billion second-quarter 2026 net income and a $4.1 trillion guaranty book. The departures therefore represent a significant leadership change, but available evidence does not establish that mortgage pricing or 30-year loan availability has been disrupted. The longer-term effect remains uncertain.
