Walmart said Thursday it has received substantially all of a $2.9 billion refund for tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and is directing the money toward lower prices and customer experience. The retailer said its U.S. team delivered more than 11,000 price reductions during the second quarter, emphasizing groceries and general merchandise. Walmart’s announcement followed a Supreme Court ruling on Feb. 20 that IEEPA did not authorize the president to impose those tariffs. Walmart’s U.S. comparable sales increased 2.6% in the quarter ended July 31, the slowest growth in six years, while e-commerce sales rose 23%. Shares fell about 9% after the earnings report. The company also expects more than $2 billion in additional fuel-related costs this year. Walmart said its pricing investments are intended to strengthen value and market share, but analysts cautioned that discounts will target selected essentials rather than restore prices to pre-pandemic levels.
