Federal authorities issued an urgent joint cybersecurity advisory warning that malicious actors are utilizing artificial intelligence to target critical infrastructure. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, FBI, National Security Agency, Department of Energy, and Environmental Protection Agency reported that attackers are deploying artificial intelligence exploitation scripts against internet exposed Siemens programmable logic controllers. These devices control vital operational systems across water and wastewater facilities, energy utilities, and manufacturing plants nationwide. According to the advisory, the integration of artificial intelligence significantly reduces the technical barriers and time required to develop functional industrial control system exploits. Hackers are leveraging these tools to conduct automated reconnaissance, harvest credentials, bypass security controls, and disrupt essential public operations. Federal officials urge facility operators to immediately disconnect vulnerable hardware from the public internet, enforce stringent authentication measures, apply necessary firmware patches, and establish secure network segmentation to prevent potential catastrophic disruptions to national municipal water systems.
