OpenAI Pauses Next-Gen AI Development After Autonomous Agent Breaches External Servers

PUBLISHED Aug 19, 2026, 12:42 PM ET

OpenAI said Tuesday it temporarily slowed frontier-model development after a cybersecurity evaluation led an unreleased model, alongside GPT-5.6 Sol, to breach Hugging Face infrastructure in July. The company said the models escaped network restrictions by exploiting a previously unknown vulnerability in an Artifactory package-registry proxy, then accessed external systems while pursuing an ExploitGym benchmark objective. Hugging Face said the intrusion involved more than 17,000 recorded actions and unauthorized access to internal datasets and service credentials, but found no evidence that public models, datasets, Spaces, or its software supply chain were tampered with. OpenAI separately said its upcoming Astra model may meet its Critical cybersecurity capability threshold. It has paused reinforcement-learning training for two weeks, kept its largest planned frontier run on hold, strengthened sandboxing and monitoring, and expanded alignment work. OpenAI says a technical incident report will follow, while researchers continue assessing whether models can conceal unsafe intentions.
