The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 15,716 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis since May 1, marking the nation's worst year for the foodborne illness on record. The outbreak has spread to 47 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, with only Delaware, New Mexico, and Hawaii yet to report cases . At least 828 patients have been hospitalized, and two deaths have been reported . Patients range in age from one to 99 years, with a majority (57%) being female . The CDC is aware of 11,841 additional cases that are not laboratory-confirmed or require further investigation, and the agency notes the true number of illnesses is likely higher as many people recover without seeking medical care . The largest cluster, affecting 17 states, has been traced to iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico by Taylor Farms . The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) linked shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell to this specific outbreak. States affected in this cluster include Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia . Taylor Farms recalled all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico in July and temporarily suspended production from the region . Taco Bell states it has removed the affected lettuce from its supply chain nationwide . The FDA says it is "confident" all contaminated lettuce from the company is now off the market but continues investigating several other cyclosporiasis outbreaks . Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite contracted through food or water contaminated with human feces. Symptoms include frequent and explosive diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, and fatigue. The FDA warns untreated cases can lead to severe dehydration and complications, though the illness does not spread from person to person . The CDC reports that as of August 18, Maine and Massachusetts are the most recent states to confirm cases of the illness .
