The U.S. national debt surpassed $40 trillion for the first time in history on August 19, according to Treasury Department data . Total public debt outstanding reached $40.047 trillion, with debt held by the public at $32.266 trillion . The milestone comes months earlier than expected due to persistent budget deficits, tax cuts, and increased military spending . Annual interest payments have soared, with net interest totaling $827 billion in the first nine months of fiscal 2026, exceeding the $713 billion defense budget . The interest costs, equivalent to combined defense and education spending, are squeezing public budgets and worsening fiscal imbalances . The escalating debt, which has grown more than $11 trillion during President Trump's two terms, prompted warnings from budget watchdogs who call the fiscal trajectory "plainly unsustainable" . The crisis drew international reaction after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed U.S. economic threats as a "diversion from America's own crisis" .
