United States parasite outbreak hits Taco Bell hard

A multistate outbreak of the gastrointestinal parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, linked by U.S. health officials to contaminated shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell, has sharply reduced customer traffic and investor confidence. On Friday, July 17, 2026, visits to Taco Bell locations were 18.9% below the chain’s average Friday traffic for the year, according to Placer.ai, versus a 1.9% decline for the broader quick‑service sector. The CDC and FDA have tied the outbreak to restaurants in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia, confirming more than 1,644 cases and at least 94 hospitalizations, with Michigan reporting thousands of additional suspected infections.
