Warren Police Chief Resigns Amid Allegations and Complaint

WARREN, Ohio. Warren Police Chief Eric Merkel has resigned and will begin using accrued vacation leave immediately, a leave period that began Thursday and extends through his final day on August 24. Merkel's resignation letter, which was also sent to WKBN, said he decided that 'stepping aside is in the best interests of the Department, its officers, and the community' and that the decision was made 'solely to allow the department to move forward without ongoing controversy.' Safety Service Director Eddie Colbert accepted the resignation Thursday, saying the action was taken to avoid the potential of costly and lengthy litigation, and ordered Merkel to return all city property. Mayor Doug Franklin said officials will focus on maintaining the high level of public safety services residents expect while moving forward with the process of selecting the department's next leader; additional information on interim leadership will be announced later.
