Authorities in Orange County, California have ordered the evacuation of nearly 50,000 residents after a damaged storage tank containing about 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate began leaking at a GKN Aerospace facility near Disneyland. The highly flammable chemical poses a risk of a major explosion and toxic plume if the tank’s structural integrity fails. Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency to accelerate the deployment of resources. As of today, firefighters and hazardous materials teams are working continuously to cool the tank, manage venting through a stress crack, monitor air quality, and transfer the chemical to a safer vessel.
