Texas issues grid emergency as record heat strains supply

Texas grid operator ERCOT declared a Level 1 Energy Emergency Alert as an intense heat wave drove electricity demand to a record 85,500 megawatts, surpassing the previous summer 2024 peak. On the day of the alert, temperatures in Dallas, Houston, and Austin exceeded 106°F, with heat indices up to 114°F reported in Del Rio and San Angelo. Operating reserves fell below 2,300 megawatts for 30 minutes, triggering emergency protocols. ERCOT began using all available generation, importing power and activating demand-response programs. Officials asked residents to conserve electricity, particularly between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM, while excessive heat warnings covered most of the state.
