Geneva agency warns of intensifying El Niño risk

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), based in Geneva, has warned that there is an 80% probability El Niño conditions will develop before September, potentially acting as a “supercharger” for global weather extremes. Climate models indicate at least a moderate event, with some projections suggesting one of the strongest El Niño episodes of the century. UN Secretary-General António Guterres called the alert an urgent call to action, noting it will exacerbate existing global warming. The WMO expects impacts including extreme heat, drought, and heavy rainfall across borders, and urges governments to prepare infrastructure, agriculture, and public safety systems in the coming months.
