An armed man who opened fire at a U.S. Secret Service security checkpoint near the White House on Saturday evening was shot by officers and later died at a local hospital, federal officials said. The incident occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m. Eastern near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just outside the main White House complex. The suspect, previously identified as an emotionally disturbed person under a legal stay-away order from the area, removed a firearm from a bag and shot at officers. A nearby civilian was critically injured by gunfire. No Secret Service personnel or White House protectees were harmed.
