House Republican leaders on Thursday withdrew a planned vote on a Democratic war powers resolution that would direct President Donald Trump to withdraw U.S. forces from hostilities with Iran, after it became apparent they lacked the votes to defeat it. The move followed a near-passage of a similar House measure last week that ended in a tie after three Republicans backed the resolution. Representative Gregory Meeks, the bill’s sponsor, said Democrats had sufficient support lined up, including Representative Jared Golden switching to support. In the Senate, Republicans are also working to block a related Iran war powers measure that recently advanced with some GOP backing.
