MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. On Thursday morning, 18-year-old Christopher Brooks died when his Honda struck the rear of a stopped dump truck near the entrance to South Fork High School as he drove to graduation practice; emergency calls arrived about 8:30 a.m. and troopers reported he was pronounced dead at the scene. This week, community members placed flowers, candles and notes at a growing memorial outside the school and the evening graduation proceeded with an empty chair to honor Brooks; Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek and school officials said investigators are examining possible distraction and vehicle speed and have provided statements to students and families.
